A Wood-Burning Fireplace in a DC Row House: Draft, Smoke and Indoor Air

In December 2023 I was in a 1905 brick row house on East Capitol Street where the owner had started getting smoke in the living room every time he lit a fire. Testing before fixing

The most useful test is also the cheapest: hold a stick of incense at the open damper before lighting. If smoke moves toward you, the chimney is in reverse draft. Note the outdoor temperature, wind direction, and which exhaust appliances are running. In the Capitol Hill house, the incense showed reverse draft reliably when the kitchen fan was on high — no fire needed to confirm the diagnosis.
