The catch is static pressure. A denser filter adds resistance. Most residential and light commercial air handlers are designed around MERV 8 to MERV 11 filters. A MERV 13 filter in a system designed for MERV 8 may reduce airflow significantly, reducing cooling and heating performance and stressing the fan motor. Before upgrading filter MERV rating in an existing system, measure the static pressure across the filter section at the old rating, then again with the new filter.
