How to measure it correctly

Place it in the center of the room at 5 feet height, not near exterior walls or return registers where conditions are biased. Log data over 24 to 48 hours; a single-point reading tells you the current condition but not whether the system is holding the target. Winter: holding 40 percent when the envelope is leaky
Adding humidity in winter depends heavily on the building’s air leakage rate. In a leaky 1940s farmhouse with 1 to 2 ACH natural infiltration, the house imports 1,500 to 3,000 cubic feet of cold outdoor air per hour in January. At 25°F and 60 percent outdoor RH, that air contains almost no moisture by mass once warmed to room temperature. A house that reads 70 percent RH on a July afternoon while the thermostat is satisfied is a house with inadequate dehumidification, not inadequate cooling.

- Lower the thermostat setpoint slightly. Running the AC longer removes more moisture. Each degree lower gives more runtime. Limited as a strategy but free.
- Portable dehumidifier for problem spaces. A 50-pint portable dehumidifier runs $180 to $280 and handles 400 to 600 square feet of conditioned space if emptied or drained continuously. Adequate for one room or a basement.
